Writing and Photography in a New Landscape

Writing has always been a second home to me. I have written short stories, plays, poetry and songs. I have also written curriculum for professional and educational groups and loved every minute of it. I see it as an authentic way for people to connect. Words are so simple and so difficult, at the same time.

So, while writing in small batches about moments of interest is a comfortable stretch, it is also a bit unnerving because the current landscape of topics is so diverse. In addition to that the response to any new writing can be much more reactive.

Blogs are a world where someone will immediately like or dislike your ideas and probably return only if it fits into their box of interest. Our worlds are so hectic, full of anxiety and stress that the noise of — yet — another viewpoint can be overwhelming … or another voice is sometimes just … that.

I remember when the movie Julie and Julia came out and the idea of blogging was relatively new. The character was writing into a virtual unknown (no pun intended) and the results were positive and affirming. I’m pretty sure that blogging rose to new heights afterwards and scores of people started to believe that amassing an audience was no harder than opening your mouth. And, while this is true in any situation — think of your uncle spewing ideas at your last family event and him thinking that his opinion was valid based on the silence — we also know that we’re reaching the end of the collective interest in EVERY opinion.

Full disclosure — I don’t have an uncle, but I do have a few male cousins whom I think are awesome.

And so, with that short introduction, the writings here are for fun, reflection and sometimes opinion. I enjoy watching interactions between people (not that many of us have had that pleasure lately) and then imagining the next moments, usually with humour. You will find that I write about the process of taking photos, as it helps me to see better. Those writings will be attached to a photo project on my website.

I hope that you enjoy some of these and if one is not to your interest, please click on the next! I will also be uploading my writings to other available platforms and have a link to my photography website when appropriate.

With gratitude
